Sometimes, we find ourselves in a place we didn’t expect to be. While I’ve occasionally found myself literally going down the wrong trail, I’ve also found myself metaphorically going down the wrong trail. I’ve spent much of this past year considering what to do in this very situation.
The advice I’ve given myself is pretty simple. It starts with remaining calm; no matter where life takes you a level head usually is a pretty helpful thing to have. Sure, looking down that is way too steep and potentially laden with rocks or other hazards can be scary. But fear makes idiots of us all, so give it it’s due but don’t let it drive you choices.
Second, gather information. Knowing where you are is essential; a trail map is helpful, but something like the Slopes App would be invaluable.
Third, consider your options. Things like looking for a line you are comfortable with or popping off your board (or skis) and walking. However, things can be more complex; for example, climbing up the trail might be your best option. Yes, an uphill climb is more draining, but taking your time and climbing up might be more attractive than trying to walk down a questionable trail or the woods onto another trail.
Ask for help if needed! Honestly, a shortcoming of my own is thinking that I need to solve the issue myself. A quick question to someone more familiar might be the fastest way to figuring your way out of this.
Of course, at the end of the day the best way to deal with this kind of thing is to avoid it all together if possible. Being aware of yourself, as well as the world around will go a long way.
Anyway, stay safe out there!
